Rock, Blues, Metal & Jazz Lessons
-
Learning to improvise is fundamental to becoming a great musician in rock, blues and jazz. Training the ear can give the third helping hand necessary to become that tasteful player.
At beginner level technique is taught initially, however the introduction of ear training running alongside the finger gymnastics can be a fun and excellent way of developing true musicianship and individual style. They say that 80% is in the mind and if it's not in the head, it's definitely not in the hands.
I also teach acoustic guitar, not forgetting all your favourite songs and solos for both electric and acoustic, a great way to start your path as a beginner.

Classical & Acoustic Lessons
-
I usually teach Classical Guitar from manuscript which requires the knowledge of reading music, this form of learning benefits this style of playing and helps the student to visualise and absorb the beauty of all the great compositions, as written by some of the worlds greatest composers.
Classical music is very structured and usually written for orchestras of various sizes with a variety of instrumentation. Can you imagine an orchestra of 80 instruments on it's roster all improvising? This genre is generally scored in manuscript and is learnt by the performer.
Classical music is known as being at the other end of the musical spectrum from Blues and Jazz.

Reading Music, Ear Training & Theory
-
The rudiments and theory of music can help with creativity and give new possibilities for your chosen instrument and genre, even a little understanding can open up many boundaries as a player, improvisor, reader and writer.
Reading music is not compulsory in my lessons but I do sometimes encourage this dependant on the students strengths, style and ability. Tab and the use of diagrams, letter association, audio and visual learning are applied as required, this in turn can also help the student to understand the rudiments and theory of music in a similar way to manuscript reading when applied correctly.
Ear training is the development of the inner ear, the understanding of sound not just in dynamics, rhythms, melody and harmony but in relevant and perfect pitch. I offer this as part of my tutorials to help with improvisation, musical emotion and many other aspects of this wonderful art form.

Music Exams Offered, including help with GCSE, A Level and Degree
-
I offer a wide range of music exams including ABRSM, LCM and Rock School both in performance and written. The exams can be taken in various genres but are not compulsory as some students feel it takes the fun out of learning. I also help many of my students with GCSE, A level and degree exams in performance, written, compositional work and music technology.
